Learning Goal: I’m working on a writing report and need support to help me learn.For this essay, students will write a 1,000 word essay that explores an experience of discrimination or a time when you felt powerless. While the story itself is important and pulls the reader in, the most important aspect of the personal essay is the larger meaning you find in the experience. Your essay should not just tell the story. It should also reflect upon and analyze the experience.Your essay should have a thesis. For this kind of essay, it is likely that your thesis will be implied, meaning you may not say it outright or explicitly; however, the story you tell and your analysis of the experience will reveal to your audience the larger point you a trying to make. This is the answer to the so what? question. A personal essay does more than just narrate a story. The personal essay also makes a point; it is an argument.Your essay should have a clear opening and closing. It should use paragraphing to organize your ideas. Topic sentences should lead your body paragraphs, and specific examples and details should support your topic sentences. In this kind of essay, the evidence to support your thesis will come from your personal experience. There is no need to look outside of yourself for the evidence. Your story is what will be used to convince, persuade, or affect your audience in some way. Your essay must do the following: Tell, Reflect, and Analyze. It does not matter in which order you do these things. In fact, you may weave in each of these strategies throughout. See the sample personal essays for examples of strategies used.
